I’m an addict named Patrick. I came to crossroads Aug. 15th 1988 and
stayed till Sept. 20th, 1989. I was referred to treatment by the
criminal justice system. I was given a choice of either completing the
program or a three year prison term. I chose crossroads thinking it was
the easiest, softest way. I was thirty five years old when I arrived at
c/r, and had been using one drug or another since I was eleven. I began
running away from home at age twelve and became familiar with the wrong
side of the law from then until recovery. I’m very loyal to the
crossroads family. Although change came hard and slow for me I feel
that I grew-up there. I spent twenty plus years, looking for something
that crossroads showed me was within me all along; I learned to care
for myself and others. I learned how to trust and to let people like
me. I learned it was safe to stop fighting. I have remained clean and
sober since July of 1988. Completing crossroads was the hardest thing
that I have done in my life. I am reunited with my family. I attended
college and received an AA degree and I have worked as a counselor for
the Humboldt county office of drugs and alcohol, and crossroads. I
think it would be a fair to say that crossroads helped me take a second
chance at life.
Thank you,
Patrick W.
